I always say it is “the how” we communicate. It is important to be mindful of when needing or wanting to have a difficult conversation to remember ‘how’ we say what we need to say. I can truly be told almost anything and if I am told in a tone, manner, direction that is helpful and not hurtful. It allows for more accountability, taking ownership or responsibility, and can make finding a middle ground much easier. If someone approaches it nice and caring, they are more than likely to be reciprocated with care and concern. If someone approaches snippy and snide, more than likely you will get that, or even worse, in return. Think about ‘how’ you would want someone to tell you something hard and then try that when you approach someone else.
“Thinking Backwards”
This is the second component to consider. Thinking backwards is considering who you want to talk to, what you know about them, what is important to them, and ‘how’ you can get the desired outcome you are hoping to gain. That word ‘how’ again comes into play. “How” do I think backwards from the desired outcome, knowing what I know about the person, and which way would work best. It is not as easy as it sounds, but it can be a very beneficial tool in effective communication.
