Lauren Xu

LMSW

Hello! I'm Lauren, a Licensed Master Social Worker with more than 4 years of experience providing psychotherapy to children, adolescents, young adults, and families. I identify as Chinese American, and I have vast experience working with people with a vast array of racial, ethnic, gender, sexual, and religious identities, as well as from varying socioeconomic status.

I have a Bachelors in Psychology with minors in Women's and Gender Studies and Chinese Language and Culture. I received my Masters in Social Work from New York University. NYU also has a campus in Shanghai, China, where I was able to study at for a year! Through this experience, I have been able to apply a global perspective when providing counseling, particularly with issues pertaining to respecting individual needs within the context of cultural and familial expectations.

As a clinician, I like to get creative to find what will foster the most success for my clients. I believe that communication is key in the therapeutic relationship, and I invite my clients let me know what is and is not working for them. I believe that therapy should be an empowering and restorative experience for you.

I specialize in working with people who have experienced a wide variety of traumas, including on-going systemic trauma. I also have extensive experience working with anxiety/ panic disorders, depression, ADD/ADHD, adjustment disorders, and impulsive disorders. My clinical practice draws from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Strengths-Based Therapy, and Trauma-Focus Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I believe in the mind/body connection, and I also utilize mindfulness in my professional and personal practices! Finally, I also believe in the power of play and the role that play can take in supporting the needs of your inner child.

I look forward to meeting with you, and I commend you in taking this step towards bettering your mental health.
