About

Career counseling is also called career guidance. Career counseling may be helpful to individuals who feel stuck in their careers or to those who have changed careers but find themselves dissatisfied with the new choice. Career counseling may facilitate decision making and promote positive choices by helping individuals explore their options and by providing feedback from a neutral source.

The basic purpose of career counseling is to help individuals find satisfying and fulfilling career choices. Career counseling can be provided by a variety of trained professionals, such as social workers, psychologists, counselors, or career counselors. All career counselors have different ways of approaching the issue of career choice. Some career counselors use a psychodynamic approach to view your personal history and the events surrounding your work life in order to discover unconscious motivations that may be leading you to make certain decisions. Others use an aptitude and interest inventory as a way to assess your interests and talents in relation to possible careers.
